Course Description

Expressive communication is one’s ability to communicate thoughts and feelings through words, gestures, or facial expressions.

Augmentative and alternative communication provides alternate means of expressive communication when the learner has limited words or verbal communication to increase student communication, socialization, and engagement while reducing interfering behaviors.

Course Summary

What Will I Learn?

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Collect information to see if an AAC assessment is needed
  • Conduct an AAC assessment
  • Prepare team members to use an AAC device
  • Plan opportunities for the student to use their AAC device
  • CTeach the learner to use their AAC device as part of a team
  • Understand formalized AAC approaches
  • Reinforce the student for using their AAC device
  • Ensure consistent device usage
  • Collect and analyze data on the target goal/behavior/skill
  • Monitor use of AAC across settings
  • Determine next steps based on learner progress

 

Course Completion Requirements

  • Attend all training sessions
  • Pass the final examination with a score of 85% or higher
  • Demonstrate practical skills in caregiving techniques

 

Certification

Participants who successfully complete the course will receive a Certificate of Competence for Augmentative & Alternative Communication, valid for employment or further training opportunities.
